One Overall Picture

The team approached this landscape overhaul in three phases. We began by creating a leveled seating area with a modern fire pit. Next, we moved on to leveling and re-installing a fresh driveway design.

All three projects, while separate, incorporate the usability and extension of the current outdoor space and how the homeowners can occupy it. The free-standing patio, outdoor dining area and outdoor kitchen provide more room for outdoor entertaining and relaxation, while the renovated walkway and landscaping create greater ease of mobility and function to the home.

Design

The homeowners wanted a level area for a fire pit and seating to gather in privacy with their friends and family at the end of the day. They hoped to separate the space from the existing patio behind the home. The homeowners also needed the front walkway and driveway reimagined on a freshly leveled landscape.

Construction

Phase One

Hively designed a free-standing patio area that is physically and visually separate from the home, creating a secluded and private area, large enough to accommodate entertaining guests. The focal point is a wood-burning fire pit atop a random-pattern bluestone patio and a custom-stone veneer seating wall. This two-level space allows for easy access to a storage shed, installed as part of the project as well.

Phase two

Consisted of renovating the front walkway from the driveway to the front entrance. In order to achieve this, we removed the original walkway and steps. The area was graded and retained by a block wall that is veneered with custom-cut natural stone, reducing cost and matching the fire pit area. The new walkway features pattern-cut bluestone. The front foundation landscape was completely renovated to include eye-catching perennials and shrubs.

Phase three

Featured the renovation of the landscaped slope at the end of the driveway. The homeowners requested a new walkway be built to connect the driveway to the patio. They also wanted an outdoor dining area and grill enclosure. Working with a local custom cabinet maker, Hively designed a grill island to house a custom grill, potboiler, and additional storage. Additionally, a custom island was designed providing bistro-style seating for eight. The island and grill station are topped with beautiful granite countertops. This is a highly functional aesthetic that hits form and style for any level of outdoor dining needs.
